Planning Laser Hair Removal? Do’s and Don’ts You Need to Know About

You’ve thrown away your razor and broken things off with your waxing specialist. Now, it’s time to give unwanted body hair the same treatment with laser hair removal.
If this is your first time getting laser hair removal or you need a refresher on how it goes, you’re in the right place.
Divina Averilla, MD, and our team at Love Your Body Medical Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada, offer this simple list of do’s and don’ts for preparing for your appointment. Let’s dive in.
Let’s start with the basics
Laser hair removal is a permanent solution to unwanted hair. It harnesses the power of laser energy to target, heat, and ultimately destroy hairs at the root, preventing them from growing back. We customize the laser based on your hair's location, thickness, and color to keep you comfortable and get the best results.
We can use laser hair removal treatments on virtually any part of the body that grows unwanted hair, including the bikini line, arms and forearms, legs, eyebrows, upper lip, and chin.
Treatments are usually fast (smaller areas can take as little as 10 minutes) and pain-free (you might feel a warming or snapping sensation).
The best part? Preparing for your appointment is easy. Here’s what you should (and shouldn’t) do.
Do your research
Laser hair removal is safe and effective — when you see an experienced and highly trained medical professional. Don’t just walk into the first facility with a sign for laser hair removal. Instead, choose a medical spa like ours with a licensed aesthetic medicine provider like Dr. Averilla.
Don’t overdo it with your skincare products
Creams and lotions (especially those with perfumes), makeup, and deodorant can all affect how well the lasers work and increase the likelihood of side effects. We recommend skipping your skincare routine for a day and resuming your regimen once your appointment is over and your skin has healed.
Do shave the treatment area
Shaving before your appointment removes the long shaft of your hair and allows the laser to target the root. When the root of your hair is disrupted, the likelihood of regrowth decreases significantly.
Don’t worry if you forget this step; we can trim your hair when you get to your office.
Don’t pluck or wax
Avoid any hair removal or treatment beyond shaving. When you remove the hair root and stem, our lasers have nothing to focus on and won’t be able to find and disrupt the follicle below the surface of your skin.
Do avoid sunburns
Side effects from laser hair removal include temporary redness, irritation, and swelling, so you don’t want to arrive at your appointment with sensitive skin. If you must go outside, do your best to cover up and apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
Don’t start tanning
In addition to avoiding sunburns, we recommend skipping tanning lotions and sprays. These products can interfere with lasers and affect their ability to target hair follicles accurately.
Do consider your prescription and supplements
Certain medications and vitamins can thin your blood, increasing your chances of experiencing side effects. Tell us about your current medications, and we’ll let you know which are safe. Never stop taking medications without consulting your primary care provider.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Before you get laser hair removal, we have a consultation with you. Use that time to ask as many questions as possible and voice your concerns. We want our patients to feel comfortable and confident with their chosen treatments.
